There was once when I used a lie on two people, who I considered my best friends. It all started with my best friend Robert. Robert and myself grew up together in Bushwick. We both attended the same schools until we arrived to college, because he wanted to become a record producer while I wanted to major in business. Yet, we still hung out together all the time. We were almost brothers, one could say.
However, our friendship changed after he fell in love with a girl. This girl was very pretty. Though, he exaggerated a little by telling me that she looked like a model. She had light skin with long curly blonde hair. Her name was Melissa. They both started to go out. They did a lot together, he claimed. He later even introduced me to her because she was planning to study business like myself. She was a sweetheart. She became a great friend of mines. We, the three of us, would always hangout and do different things together. We would go to movies and to parties. We became very close. With time, she became like a younger sister to me. I felt I could trust these two forever. I was always truthful to my two best friends. When one of them needed something I was always there for them. I would never abandon them. In other words, I was always faithful to them because they were like family to me.
After three months of Robert dating that same gorgeous girl, who was my best friend, it turned out she kept a secret from us. It was a Saturday night and I was at a party, which some friends invited me to. When I got there I took off my jacket. I was thirsty, so I went over to a table to get a drink and I saw Melissa at a couch. To my surprise, she was hugging and kissing this other guy. I was almost right in front of her but she didn't even notice me because she was so entertained with this other guy. I asked a friend of mine if he saw her come in with that guy. He replied and said that they've been going out for a while. Just as I was finishing my soda, I turned around and she finally saw me, and she panicked.
She instantly got up and ran towards me. She grabbed my left arm and took me by the wall to ask me if Robert came with me. I told her that he was not there. She then, told me that she had been going out with this new guy, named Michael, for about three weeks. She then asked me to make sure I didn't tell Robert, and that if Robert was to ask me something about her to just stay quite. I decided to do her that favor. I could tell she was relieved when I said that. Melissa told me that she was still Robert's girlfriend. She then gave the guy a good-bye kiss and left.
I wasn't angry because it wasn't any of my business but I was bothered. Robert was like an older brother to me. He gave me advice and other things of that nature. It's sad to see him if he was to find out about this. He cared about her very much and she was doing this to him, and worst of all I was an accomplice.
Three days later, I was hanging out with Robert. He started to tell me that Melissa was acting strange around him. He asked me questions, as if he was a detective trying to solve a case. He started putting pressure on me. I mean the guy was literally making me sweat. He then started asking me if I was all right, because I was starting to look funny myself. I told him that I was all right, just a bit tired. He gave me this serious look and I looked away. When we started walking, he stopped for a moment and again asked if I was sure that I did not know anything about Melissa and her weirdness. I guess I looked too suspicious to him. I told him to relax and I kept walking so that he could follow and get off the topic. I gave him advice by telling him that maybe she needed space, and he agreed with me.
Another few weeks passed, and I saw Robert and Melissa at a mall in Queens. It seemed that their relationship was ok. By that, I meant that he still did know nothing about her cheating on him. Even though, I saw him hugging and kissing her I felt bad for him.
One Friday night Robert and myself decided to go to the theatre. Robert told me that Melissa couldn't make it because she was busy at work. So we went on to catch an 8:00 P.M movie. We then went to Burger King. We ordered our meal to stay. A moment later, as we were eating our food Melissa and Michael walked in. Robert looked at me with these burning eyes and quickly looked back at them. Melissa didn't know we were there, not until Robert got up from his seat and began walking towards her. I could see that she was laughing and smiling with Michael. When she saw Robert walking up to her, that smile completely faded out to a shocking reaction. I got up and quickly walked towards him. I began telling myself that hopefully, nothing got out of control. Robert and Michael asked who one another were. Everyone was confused. Melissa explained to Michael that Robert was her boyfriend. Michael didn’t know about this. He looked very disappointed and told Robert that he didn’t know she had a boyfriend. Robert began to curse him out because he didn’t believe him. Melissa tried to calm him down. That’s when things started to go too far because Robert asked Michael to step outside and take care of things. Both guys went out. I instantly followed them outside and told Robert that she was telling the truth. He turned around and was surprised to find out that I knew about this hidden relationship Melissa had. I let both Melissa and especially Robert down for lying to him.
Michael told Melissa he couldn’t be with her and then told Robert that he didn’t know and left. Robert told me he was angry because I didn’t tell him anything. He told me that a true friend wouldn’t do this to another friend, and I agreed. I felt very bad. Melissa took Robert by the arm and took him inside the restaurant. I stood outside looking through the windows to see what’s going on. I could see Melissa doing all the talking. Then, I saw Robert put his head down and look outside. I look away fast. I figured Melissa told him that I knew all this time. A few minutes later I see both come out. Melissa walks out first. She gave me a hug and tells me to take care. Robert and myself are left alone. We begin to walk and he explained to me that their relationship ended even as friends because she couldn’t stand to be with someone she used to love. I felt bad when I heard the news. He told me I should have just told him when I first found out because it hurt more the way he found out in Burger King. That night I went home and thought about everything. I learned that lying just so my friends cannot breakup was not the right thing. Yet, I had to do it this time because as you can see from the results the truth destroyed our relationship.
